Welcome to laExpose’ South Africa which is part of

South Africa is one of the most multicultural countries in the world. In urban areas many different ethnic groups make up the population. In addition to the indigenous black peoples of South Africa, colonialism and immigration have brought in white Europeans, Indians, Indo-Malays, Chinese and many more. As such it is difficult to generalize at all on South African etiquettes and culture due to the diversity.

The array of unique cultures found in South Africa has led to the country being described as the Rainbow Nation.

Because of the segregationist policy of apartheid prior to the first democratic elections of 1994, South African cultural diversity is still broadly aligned to racial identities. Assimilation is occurring, however, which is why it has become important to preserve cultural aspects of all the ethnic groups that make up this complex society.

South Africa’s unique cultures can generally be divided into 5 categories. By far the majority of the country’s people are from the 9 black groups; there is also a sizeable white population made up predominantly of English and Afrikaans speakers; mixed race coloureds are found mainly in the Western Cape; descendants of Asian immigrants are concentrated predominantly in the cities to the east; and then there are the fascinating Bushmen and Khoisan, the original inhabitants.

The diversity of the unique cultures of South Africa means that we have 11 official languages, with sign language also recognised. These are English, Afrikaans, Xhosa, Zulu, Venda, Ndebele, Sepedi (Northern Sotho), Setswana, Southern Sotho, Swati, and Tsonga. English, though, is widely used as the common language of communication.
